For those of us inspired by travel, many of us perhaps don’t actually know how we got there. If you’re in to your 30s like me and don’t necessarily come from the realms of the super-rich, then your child-hood trips probably resulted in a trip to the local seaside, maybe a trip to go see relatives in your school holidays (which never seemed like an actual holiday at the time, but how much do you value those trips with your elderly / maybe passed rellies now?!) or perhaps the classic package holiday trip to a destination but a few hours away, crowded with only your own nationality anyway! The extent of travel possibly never really got properly going until late student years or even in to your adulthood.
A sudden intrigue in the world, coupled with the ever growing ease of reaching obscure destinations and the more cushioned lining of our wallets (thank you job / credit!); means our travel desires and needs are rather now met all too easily. When I consider all of the places I’ve already travelled to and in comparison to my late mother whose own holiday ventures extended to Majorca a few hours flight away from home, I feel a much sudden surge of appreciation in a world where we often take everything a little bit too much for granted.
Yet we should also understand that travels during our childhoods may have led us to appreciate the comparison we now face when looking at our ventures of late. After all, if we have ever experienced a little less in life, do we not often appreciate it when we experience the more?..
In my travel posts, I intend on discussing various locations I’ve visited with a frank and (hopefully) somewhat helpful and mildly entertaining view. I hope you enjoy or at least, take a little something away!..
